When     : Wednesday 17th March 2010

Known as Scribbly Gum, one of a number of smooth-barked Eucalypts that have been visited by the larvae of a small grey moth burrowing in the bark cause these marks.

Eucalyptus haemastoma is restricted to the Central Coast and Tablelands of NSW and bushland around Sydney.

Lane Cove Morning

DSCF7146copy

Where    : Lane Cove River

When     : 6-45am, Sunday 21st March 2010

Weapon : FujiFilm FinePix S3 Pro
Window : AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR II

This shot is taken of the Lane Cove River at the weir - this is the freshwater upriver stretch that is only 10kms to the head of the river at Westleigh and Wahroonga on the junction of the Pennant Hills Road and Pacific Highway.

Downstream from the weir, the Lane Cove River estuary can be classified as a drowned river valley estuary, deep and narrow with rocky sides, and consequently little attenuation of tidal range. A short, often violent and fascinating river indeed falls 600 feet in 10 kilometres or so.

Plenty of dew around this morning - a typical Autumn Day in Sydney. Nights get down to about 17 degrees or so, and today we are heading for 31 degrees in the City and maybe 33 degrees up here in Ku-ring-gai.

Banksia Serrata

There are plenty of flowering banksias at the moment along the Old Road from North Turramurra down to Bobbin Head - no, not the current road (Ku-ring-gai Chase Road), but the old dirt road (take a righty after the gates and after the turn to the Sphinx).

Apple Tree Bay is where the locals launch their boats - and where the rich moor them yet seldomly seem to sail them.

It really is a beautiful spot, located in the Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, just a short drive from home - say 15 minutes. We really are very lucky to live so close to the bush and the Hawksbury River.

At last I am starting to use the S3 that I bought from my friend Jon in Canada 2 years ago.

It is a bit different from the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P72 and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3 that I have been using.

For a start, it is h-u-g-e in size comparison, paricularly with the 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED IF AF-S VR DX Zoom Nikkon lens.    The whole beast has an at-first, daunting set of controls that need to be set. It is fairly heavy too. This is a serious snapper slapper.

Still, I am starting slowly, in P(rogrammmed) mode. We shall see.

Scarlet O'Hara

Boug0210

Where   : Turramurra

When    :  Tuesday 9th February 2010

Weapon : Panasonic DMC-TZ3

One of my favourite bougainvilleas, the Scarlet O'Hara is a vigorous, low maintenance climber and creates a large, dazzling scarlet display. The semi-evergreen leaves hold on well in winter. We have trained this beauty over and through the wrought iron bits on our front porch.

Industrial Ponzi

Indwaste

Where   : Balmain

When    : 10 January 2010

Weapon : Panasonic Lumix TZ3

Where will it all end ?   I think the planet is overpopulated - we need to raise the standard of living by having fewer people to share the world's wealth - rather than funding capacity to look after the expanding populations by pumping in more children - the final Ponzi Scheme.
